Alex Marquez undergoes successful surgery after Barcelona crash

Successful surgery for Marquez, who is expected to return to Madrid later today

Alex Marquez has successfully undergone surgery on his fractured right collarbone following a serious crash in the Catalan Grand Prix.

The Gresini MotoGP rider fell heavily on the ground after colliding with race leader Pedro Acosta, whose KTM developed a sudden electrical issue on the run down to Turn 10.

Marquez suffered a fracture to his right collarbone, for which a plate was inserted to stabilise it, pending emergency surgery. Motorsport.com learned on Monday, during the in-season test in Barcelona, that the younger of the Marquez brothers has already undergone surgery and that it was successful.

The Spaniard is set to return to Madrid this afternoon, where he will begin his rehabilitation. There is still no detailed timeline for his recovery.

It is worth noting that he suffered another injury, a minor fracture of the C7 vertebra; however, he has not undergone surgery for it. Regarding that injury, “further tests will be conducted” this week, as the Gresini team explained in a press release on Sunday afternoon.

The situation was somewhat better for LCR's Johann Zarco, whose leg got caught in Francesco Bagnaia's as part of a three-way incident that also involved Luca Marini in the first restart. According to his team LCR, the Frenchman "sustained injuries to the anterior and posterior cruciate ligament, and to the medial meniscus. He also suffered a small fibula tear in the ankle area."

Both, naturally, are missing Monday’s test in Barcelona, as is race winner Fabio Di Giannantonio, the third rider involved in the accident involving Acosta and Alex Marquez, due to an injury to his left hand.
